The scope of work includes carrying out specialized engineering studies to investigate the causes of the identified issues along the Ras Ghumais–Ghagha Island Road and to develop appropriate engineering solutions and designs to address these problems. The proposed solutions shall be safe, economical, and designed to minimize any impact on the surrounding environment.
The road consists of two main sections. The first section is located on land and is relatively far from the sea, with an approximate length of 30 km. The second section is a causeway extending through the Arabian Gulf, with an approximate length of 5 km, including a concrete bridge with a length of 520 m. This section of the road is protected from seawater forces by large rock armour units. The causeway section is experiencing the following issues, which may affect the structural integrity of the road:
Deep cavities and grooves, in some locations extending beneath the road, within the service areas adjacent to the asphalt pavement, particularly in the areas before the Ghagha Bridge.
Soil erosion in the upper area of the service zone towards the sea, outside the road shoulder, particularly in the areas before the police checkpoint.
Depressions and cracks within the pavement layers in certain areas, particularly before the police checkpoint. Remedial works have been carried out in this section by repaving the affected areas containing the settlements.
